MLP Episode Review: Keep Calm and Flutter On

It's good to be back.

This was the funniest episode of the show to date. The reason for this, of course, is Discord. I don't think I'm spoiling anything by giving away the cold open. Anyways, Discord was funnier than ever in this episode. Even fan-made works haven't written him quite this well. Most of the other cast was barely even necessary, as Discord was basically holding the entire episode on his own. Almost all 21 minutes of it are gut-bustingly hilarious.

On top of that, the three weeks of production really paid off, as this episode has some very good animation. It may not have the sweeping shots of the premier, but it does have some very smooth animation, especially on Discord. Where this episode's animation excels is in the sheer level of detail put into it. As a result, the final product does not look like it was made in Flash. As in, even less than usual.

Finally, the episode's concept may not look good on paper, but it's executed in a way that's not only very entertaining, but consistent. Discord remains in character throughout the entire episode, even when it gets more sentimental. This means more than you think, but I can't give it away due to spoilers. This episode continues the legacy of bringing fan concepts forward in a way that is much more natural than the fans can do. Fan works may milk such a concept for a reaction, but the show proper always makes it smooth and natural, and, most importantly, doesn't dwell on it. This episode is no exception.

I'm going to say the same thing I said in the "Wonderbolt Academy" and Spike at your Service" reviews. This is one of my favorite episodes. It can't beat the premier, but that's only due to a lack of scale, as it does everything else right. Without another two-parter to end the season, "The Crystal Empire" will remain my favorite, but that's not to put down other episodes. There hasn't been an episode this season that I disliked, and "Keep Calm and Flutter On" is no exception. It's just too bad that it's only 13 episodes.
