Extended thoughts: Edge of Tomorrow

Here I discuss a few points of Edge of Tomorrow that couldn't be referenced without spoiling. [WARNING: SPOILERS]

About midway through the film, Rita reveals to Cage about a soldier she'd seen die three hundred times and was unable to save. This is one of the movie's deepest moments, indicating the horrors of war and the burden that'd come from being able to reset time. A similar idea can be found in Cage's later references to being unable to save Rita, and to having no idea what to do. He may have the ability to reset time, but not knowing what to do with that makes him feel even more helpless, and seeing things go wrong over and over again must be traumatizing and disheartening.

As I said in the main review, the film gets a bit weaker in the third act. This is due to the loss of Cage's ability to rewind time, which raises the stakes but also removes some of the film's uniqueness. A large part of what was compelling in the film was all of the clever ways in which it utilized its concept, and with that gone it was just slightly less interesting. However, it is true that the raised stakes allowed this final act to be more intense than the previous ones, which is quite effective for a third act.
