Before Midnight review

Before Midnight is a film that not everyone will watch. It's both a romantic drama and a limited release, meaning that even the few who can watch it may be turned off by the premise. This is a shame, because the film is genuinely brilliant.

Before Midnight is a very well-shot film, with the cinematography working to make us feel close to the characters. At points, the shots convey more emotion than even the writing does. The actors play their parts flawlessly, to the point where it becomes easy to forget they're just acting.

The characters themselves are interesting and likable, and the movie does a good job of making us invested in their lives as we see their experiences. As the details of their past get revealed to us, I became attatched to these characters. With all the emotions they expressed, I came to care about these  people.

As if that wasn't enough, the movie has no lack of depth. The main couple expresses several emotions and discusses various ideas throughout the film, but it all feels natural. The film contemplates many ideas, and provides all of its perspectives intelligently and insightfully. In the end, that's why this film is so great. Through all its great characters and powerful acting, it shows a picture of a marriage with all the love and commitment that goes in to it.

If I haven't made it clear enough yet, you need to watch this movie. It's absolutely brilliant, and will be a definite contender for the best movie of the year.
