Fargo episode review: The Rooster Prince

Fargo is back, and it's still incredible!

Finally I was able to watch the new Fargo episode. I missed it when it first aired due to FX moving it to a different channel, but finally I've caught up, and damn is this show good. The new episode is perhaps even more funny and gripping than the first.

When we return to Lester, we see him stricken with guilt, but continuing to perpetuate the lie. His character is static in this episode, but he remains a key character, if not the protagonist. This episode shows his dynamic with Molly grow. Molly grows increasingly suspicious of Lester, but he's friends with the police chief, Bill, so Molly finds impediments to her lead. This becomes the most enthralling part of the episode, as it makes up the bulk of the show's main plot. It remains to be seen how Molly and Lester will deal with these new sources of pressure.

Meanwhile, we meet the "guys from Fargo" mentioned in the first episode. They have a somewhat amusing gimmick wherein they have to relay information through sign language, but through their subplot we learn that these aren't simple comic relief. They haven't joined the main plot yet, but it'll be interesting to see what happens with them.

Lorne gets involved with a supermarket baron in Duluth, where Billy Bob Thorton continues to give an excellent performance. Lorne is creepy yet funny, aloof yet ruthless. His subplot shows a different mystery forming, which will presumably be resolved in the next episode. A highlight of the episode is his deeply unsettling listening material.

Finally, Gus has to consider his actions in the first episode. At the moment he stands by them, but there are signs that he's still afraid, and wonders if he did the right thing. We meet his daughter, Greta, and see their connection. Gus only vaguely alludes to what he did, but Greta is able to provide a different perspective. How this will influence Gus remains to be seen.

This episode shows that Fargo still has plenty of steam left, and it's only getting better.

Fargo airs on Tuesday nights on FXX.
