True Detective pilot review

BEST NEW PROGRAM
Finally I begin catching up on the acclaimed new HBO series. Find the review below.

True Detective has been getting a lot of buzz, and it's not hard to see why. This detective series isn't your typical procedural-it's a different beast entirely. Here, you have detectives Marty (Woody Harrelson) and Rust (Matthew McCounaghey) investigating a rather unusual murder case, framed by interviews with the two in the present.

The two characters at the centre are perhaps the series' greatest strength. Rust is the more compelling of the two, with his strange pessimistic views and his sad backstory, but Marty's interactions with Rust come close to matching him. The two have a great dynamic, one which grows as the pilot progresses. But the characters also grow independently, with further development and exploration of their motivations and backstories being effective in making both characters more interesting.

But the characters wouldn't be as great if the acting wasn't so brilliant. McCounaghey, having proven himself a fantastic actor in last year's Dallas Buyers Club, proves a compelling presence as Rust, while Harrelson proves his equal as Marty. The supporting cast also does a great job, but it's these two performances that drive the show forward.

The show itself is incredibly well made. While the script is clearly just setting up the show at this point, the blend of mystery and philosophy shows potential, and the increasing tension and compelling plot promises to bloom into something fantastic-and if the show's acclaim and popularity says anything, that's indeed the case.

As I progress through catching up on this show, I will be writing reviews of the various episodes. For now, though, I can say that the pilot definitely draws me in to watch the rest.

10/10
