Billboard Hot 100 review 15/02/2013

Billboard never changes.

There's only four new songs from last time. That means that in all these weeks less than half of the top 10 songs on the Hot 100 are different.

Two songs have had a short run on the top 10 between last time and now:

Justin Timberlake - Suit and Tie

This song has an interesting retro vibe to it. I can't say it sounds like anything from today. Justin Timberlake continues to have more class than all of his contemporaries combined, making a very entertaining song to listen to. I bet the ladies love it.

Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child

This song has had a very wide and very sporadic chart run, constantly bobbing in and out of the top 10. The song itself is an excellently produced piece of house music, and it can be expected to light up some clubs. The song has a bit of a lyrical dissonance-not just with the tune, but with themselves. The chorus and the melody are light and cheerful, but the verses have a slightly bitter tone to them. It seems that the narrator has some dislike of his life, and wishes for the days of his youth. I don't fully understand what the group's trying to say with this song, but I find it interesting.

Anyways, on to the hits.

10. Classified ft. David Miles - Inner Ninja

I have trouble keeping a straight face when I say that "Inner Ninja" is actually a very clever piece of music. Lyrically, it's hard to describe. Somehow, it's comparing Classified's life to that of a ninja... and somehow it works. Classified talks about how he built himself out of a bad place, and how he's living on top. He builds himself as an inspirational figure, telling his life story of struggle. Now he's sitting at the top 10 of the Hot 100. Good on you, Classified. I hope to see more from you.

9. Maroon 5 - Daylight

Maroon 5 has been going downhill over the past couple of years. "Moves Like Jagger" was an act of utter stupidity, but it was fun to listen to. "Payphone" was a bit dull, but otherwise inoffensive. "One More Night" was performed entirely by Adam Levine, removing any need for a band, and was also apparently about a guy who was so upset that he couldn't leave his girlfriend in a relationship that doesn't even seem to be in all that much danger. "Daylight" may be better than "One More Night", but it comes off as a song in which nobody involved cared about the final product. Everything about it is bland and apathetic. If it seems like I'm not spending much time talking about the song, that's because there's nothing to say about it. It's just a mediocre song with absolutely nothing interesting about it.

8. Serena Ryder - Stompa

It's been a good year for Canadian music so far. Between Classified and our current subject, Serena Ryder, we've got some good stuff unfolding. "Stompa" is dance music with an intensity it's been lacking in recent years. I like dance-pop as much as your regular top 40 listener, but this just blows it out of the water. In a market that never has anything even remotely heavy, this is a breath of fresh air. The metalheads out there may not like me describing this as "heavy", but they haven't heard the songs that get in the Top 40 here. This is a place with even more poppy music than the U.S. I'm just so, so glad this was as successful as it is, so there's something unique sounding on the radio.

1. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz - Thrift Shop

This song is great. Ryan Lewis' beats are absolutely amazing, with some beautiful chords near the end. Macklemore's verses are hilarious, and infinitely quotable. Wanz's chorus is one of the catchiest I've heard in a while, partially because it doesn't sound like anything we've had in a long time. It's a fun song where the artists seem to have had as much fun making it as you do listening to it. I'm so glad this overtook "Scream and Shout" as number one, and not just because that song is awful. Seriously, I just love this too much.

So, that's what's new. That's it. Everything else is the same as before. Well, you can't accuse the charts of being inconsistent. See you next time.
