MLP Episode Review: Magical Mystery Cure

I'm still not entirely sure what I just watched.

Magical Mystery Cure does not feel like a standalone episode. For that reason, it can't be reviewed in the same way. What we'll look at is how it executes what it actually does.

Before that, there's some quick things I need to mention. Taken on its own merits, the episode leaves you with a lot of questions, and seems to undermine the show's tone of friendship. However, this episode clearly wasn't supposed to be taken on its own. It ends on a borderline cliffhanger, even. Quite simply, the episode consisted almost entirely of musical numbers, and breezed through the original episode premise, leaving it feeling rushed. I still think this is because it's only part of a whole.

As said, Magical Mystery Cure is jam-packed with songs, and all of them are great. The quality of the compositions has increased dramatically since the start of the season, which, combined with some epic vocal work, creates a feeling of grandeur. Overall great work by the sound team.

The episode is also visually impressive, with several pieces of eye candy and several impressive scenes.

As usual, some depth can be gleamed out of the episode, this time in regards to identity. The characters had their identity reaffirmed, but Twilight may have to face some identity issues of her own.

More importantly, the episode sets up the possibility for something truly epic to happen next season. Now that Twilight is a princess, just as many possibilities have been opened as have been closed, possibly even more. With all the opportunities for stories now floating about, I'm excited to see what the writers do in S4.

I don't feel I can judge this episode without seeing the payoff. On its own, it doesn't really hold up. However, I don't think it's supposed to be taken on its own. The only reason that this episode's split so weirdly is because of Hasbro's episode limitation. Conclusion? Wait and see. That's what I plan to do.

P.S. Any fanworks with non-Alicorn Twilight can just take place before the episode. Just thought I should mention that.
