Community episode review: History 101

Oh Community, how I love thee...

Community's fourth season has begun with History 101, an episode that lives up to the previous three seasons spectacularly. While the season being cut in half is cause for worry, the last show I watched that had a season cut in half turned out extraordinarily well. Either way, Community has a bright future, judging by this episode.

History 101 balances two story threads. First is Jeff's story thread, and second is Abed's story thread. Both threads aren't just funny, but display some great character moments as well. Jeff's shows how far he's come since Season 1. No longer is he the jerk who's in it all for himself. Now Jeff cares about his study group. He is willing to go through many risks for them, because they're his friends. On the other hand, Abed's story arc is a somewhat dark look into some of his insecurities. The episode constantly shifts between Abed's imaginary world and the real world, and some notable differences can be seen. The imaginary world is similar to Season 2, and the shift between it and the real world is incredibly revealing about how the characters have developed.

Of course, the show has in no way given up its comedy. The episode has so many great comedic moments, and is indeed one of the stronger ones of the series in that regard. I won't spoil them. They don't need to be seen to be appreciated, but they deserve to be seen.

This is not a change in the show. This is a celebration of everything that the show is. It's an amazing beginning to the new season, and I look forward to tuning in every Thursday at 9.
