Canadian Hot 100 review, 11/05/2013

Time to dust of this old blog and get back to business. What's new on the charts, and how does it hold up?

10. Inner Ninja - Classified ft. David Miles
9. Red Hands - Walk Off The Earth

I'd never heard Walk off the Earth before, but colour me impressed. This song has a very unique song, one that is not at all unpleasant to listen to. The song has some very nice harmonies on its chorus, and the verses have a nice soft tone to them to make the exciting chorus even better. The instrument playing is pretty decent as well. I also like how each member gets a part of the verses, but then they come together for the chorus. For once, it's possible my year-end chart may have a lot of local music to speak about, because it's been an amazing year for Canadian music.
8. Heart Attack - Demi Lovato

Okay, Demi Lovato, my patience is up. If you're not gonna try to make a good song, I'm not gonna try to like it. You really think that you can get away with a chorus consisting just of basic arpeggios? Well, apparently so, because this song's charting really high right now. Lyrically, the song makes no sense. This is excusable when the song sounds good, but Demi sounds kinda bored. She sings loudly-and generically, might I add-but she doesn't get across any energy. Maybe her voice just sucks, I don't know. On the verses, she's overpowered by the music-and the music is dull and repetitive. Then she wails the chorus, somehow still sounding like she just doesn't want to be there-possibly because the chorus is just a bunch of cliches that you could hear by serching a bad cover on YouTube.

7. Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams

Okay, this is great. Daft Punk is back, and they're better than ever. Enlisting hip-hop production star Pharrell Williams, the techno duo creates an epic comeback single that is the perfect way to tell you that they mean business. Much of the song sounds perhaps a bit different from their earlier stuff-but that's not a bad thing. Their techno styles are still different from popular artists like David Guetta and Calvin Harris, and they can still be picked out on the radio. Plus they still have a touch of their previous style, as they use it as a pseudo-drop a bit over half-way through the song. The production is fantastic, the singing sounds great, and the beat is indisputably danceable. It's a great comeback from a great artist.
6. Feel this Moment - Pitbull ft. Christina Aguilera
5. Mirrors - Justin Timberlake

JT is back, and better than ever. Returning to the scene with the suave "Suit and Tie", he followed it up with the equally great "Mirrors". Justin just so sincere throughout the song. It'a s very genuine sounding song, perhaps a callback to a style long passed. Sonically, it's an absolute pleasure. Whoever Justin's getting to produce these songs seriously needs some kudos. However, it's JT's voice that really brings it up. If he didn't have the chords, the song may not have worked. But he really brings it, and he sounds great. It's a great song in pretty much every way.

4. When I Was Your Man - Bruno Mars
3. Stay - Rihanna
2. Can't Hold Us - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft. Ray Dalton

Observe, if you will, the new king of the pop world. Macklemore, of an independent label, with his trusty producer Ryan Lewis. Both deserve equal credit for the great songs that are allowing them to dominate the charts like this. Can't Hold Us is brought up just as much by Macklemore's lyrics as by Ryan Lewis' production. Then there's Ray Dalton, delivering a great chorus that pulls it all together. Macklemore tells the people what they've been waiting to hear-he's not gonna be held down by commercialism and labels. He's making this for the people. Ryan Lewis backs this up with some grandiose beats, always having the perfect sound at the perfect time. This song may not have the sheer cleverness of Thrift Shop, but I'd argue it's much better due to its sheer scale. It may be the best song on the radio at present.

1. Just Give Me a Reason - P!nk ft. Nate Reuss

Oh... okay. Alright then. So the number one hit is something I've already discussed. Oh well. I don't have a major rant for an up-and-coming song at the moment, so let's put our hands up like the ceiling can't hold us.
