5 Days a Stranger is a point-and-click adventure game by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, who you might know for his video game review show "Zero Punctuation". Anyways, he also made this, which is one of four game in his "Chzo Mythos" series.
5 Days a Stranger succeeds because of it's incredibly well written story. All the central characters are interesting, and by the end you can get very attached to them. There's a lot of horrific back story found in books throughout the game. It takes place, fittingly, over 5 in-game days. At the end of each day, there is a VERY graphic scene... followed by this.
I think you can connect the dots.
Anyways, the game is excellent on every level, and I will come back to this series in the future. For now, I can easily recommend the first installment.
