October Buildup: Eversion

Eversion is a platformer-horror hybrid. It seems all bright and happy, right? Well... You'll see.

The game begins with an H.P. Lovecraft quote. That should be fair warning about the contents. Then, you reach the title screen. To progress through the game, you need to find "eversion points", where you basically warp reality to allow new forms of progression. However doing so will slowly turn the world from this:

To this:

Yeah, let's just say that reality warping isn't exactly nice to the world.

Eversion has very smooth gameplay, and works like most side-scrolling platformers. Jump on enemies, jump on platforms, tear reality apart plank by plank. Simple. However, the deeper you get into your reality warping, the harder the game gets. To find the true ending, you need to collect all of the gems scattered around the worlds, and later in the game this gets very frustrating. The game actually has three endings, so finding them all adds much replayability.

In conclusion, Eversion is a very effective horror game that doubles as a tough classic platforming experience, and therefore provides the best of both worlds. Just be warned that it can be very tough.

Next is 5 Days a Stranger.
