October Buildup: Yume Nikki

Yume Nikki is a game where you take a stroll through a girl's dreams. However, as you explore, you find that these dreams are... not quite healthy. No, Yume Nikki is a game of unspeakable horrors, and pure mind screw.

In Yume Nikki, there is a waking world and a dream world. The waking world only exists to let you save and play NASU, one of the most depressingly futile games ever created. No, the REAL fun begins when you go to the bed and enter the dream world. The dream world consists of a nexus that leads to 12 worlds. From here, your goal is simply to find deeper worlds and the greater horrors within.

Along the way, you find special abilities that help you do unique actions. For example, there's a bicycle that increases your movement speed, and a knife that lets you kill the denizens of the dream world. But don't worry-they come back. They always come back. And what happens when you collect all of these abilities? Well... Let's just say that it isn't pretty.

Part of the fun is simply piecing together what any of this means. The further you explore, the more things make sense. Yume Nikki has a devoted fandom that simply loves to make guesses as to the nature of the dream world and our protagonist's life. And trust me... It's not a life you would want to have.

Yume Nikki is not yet finished, and there's no sign it ever will be. Yet, the game we have here is still a fantastic triumph of style, with enough substance to keep you for far longer than may be needed. As for next time... Next we look at Slender.
