First Impressions: The Legend of Korra

So, having begun watching The Legend of Korra, what do I think from the first two episodes?

The Legend of Korra is the sequel to Nickelodeon's previous series, "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Now, Avatar was charming enough and had some very good writing on its side. At this point, it's uncertain if Korra will be able to reach that level.

The Legend of Korra has a very, very slow start. The first episode focuses more on the world than on the story or characters. On the other hand, the second episode picks up the slack, upgrading it in my opinion from a guilty pleasure to a flawed gem. It still lacks an interesting conflict, but the actual execution is much better later on.

This franchise has always had spectacular animation. This show is no exception, with a high level of fluidity, a perfect blending of painted backgrounds and added-in characters, and stunning art. At the same time, it's always moving, to the point of being irritating. One has to wonder why Korra always waves her hands around when talking.

The most important part, however, is the script. Most of the first episode was world building, and it does a spectacular job of this. The second episode has more happening than the first, but still not much. The Legend of Korra is well executed, but nothing really happens in it.

I kind of love this show. It's very endearing for a number of reasons, and I expect it to get better as I go further into it.
