MLP Episode Review: Apple Family Reunion

Everyone still alive? Yes? Alright, then. Let's post ponies.

Apple Family Reunion is the second last episode of 2012. It's not a strong way to go out, but it isn't bad.

This episode is consistently funny. The characters' personalities bouncing off of each other in such a populated area ensure that there will be shenanigans. Indeed, shenanigans ensue. Less than expected, but still some. The problem mostly comes when that's the primary strength of the episode. Frankly, there isn't a strong underlying conflict until at least halfway through.

This is the third Mane Six episode of the season. I'd say I'm not even mad, but I kind of am. While the other episodes were all good, why did we need another Trixie episode? Why did the Babs Seed episode need to happen? That said, both were great episodes, so I can't be too upset.

Back on topic, this is Applejack's episode. In it, she always seems a bit... nervous? She's pushing for the events to happen, and it eventually causes problems. The primary theme of the episode is developed first through Applejack's rushing of the events and then through the climax and finale. Speaking of which, it's actually a pretty good theme, coming back to the friendship that endeared so many people to season 1. Not me, but many other people. I like character development and humor, which this episode delivered on.

There is also a song in this episode. I hope you like country, because this is very, very country. However, it still has Daniel Ingram's trademark of slowing down the theme at the end. If you look back at every song in the show, most of them have this tendency. It's a fun enough song, if not quite mass appeal. It's the aforementioned slowdown at the end that I really like about it.

Overall, this is my new least favorite episode of the season. However, if this is your weakest link, then you're in pretty good shape, because it's still a very good episode.
