Trixie was the one-shot villain for the episode, "Boast Busters". Unfortunately, in that episode she really didn't have many traits other than being smug and arrogant, and I actually rather disliked her. This episode is more or less what "Boast Busters" should have been. Same as last time, let's go over the points.
As said, Trixie didn't seem to be much more than an obnoxious villain, with no real likable qualities. This episode makes her a bit less shallow then that, and makes her presence more entertaining. Additionally, while Trixie is actually a much larger villain in this episode, it's covered up rather clearly.
"Boast Busters" also suffered from dull writing. The climax was disappointing, the jokes were few and in between, and it simply didn't live up to it's own promises. "Magic Duel" is engaging throughout, and supplies more than a few laughs.
The writers on board for this season can pretty much do anything. On top of making previously obnoxious characters enjoyable, they are constantly participating in subtle world building, and leaving the fandom with large amounts of material to work with. Not only do I expect this to be the best season of the show, but I expect the fanworks to be better than ever. See you later.
