Looper review

Ah yes, Looper. Critically acclaimed, and almost entirely out of theaters. But is it any good? Find out after the break!

I think the "critically acclaimed" part gives away that yes, it is good. Looper is very, very good. Why is it good? Well, for starters, it's smart. It's incredibly smart sci-fi with an incredibly well established setting. The rules of the universe are set out right at the start and are followed consistently throughout the film.

The tone is fairly dark. The future scenes involve various horrible things occurring  and the past scenes have their share of nasty little events as well. At first, the film is very noir, with the protagonist narrating at several points. While this stops later on, the tone retains some noir influence.

The characters are incredibly likable, to the point that the film lacks any true villains. All of the characters have understandable motivations, even if some of them do things that may seem immoral. These characters' emotional scenes are very effective as a result, and even if some parts of logic are slightly off, it doesn't do much damage to the film as a whole.

The plot is something that I just can't praise enough. As said, it's highly intelligent, with all the twists being major surprises-but not pulled completely out of thin air. The writing is excellent, with dialogue being intelligent and serving to make the characters seem more human. The film may seem more complicated than it actually is, but is actually not too hard to follow. Simply put, it's brilliant.

Looper deserves all the praise that it's gotten, with it's smart writing, its likable characters, and its smooth style, and I would recommend that you go see it while you still have the chance.
